Translating circular economy into practical knowledge for entrepreneurs
Upcycle Your Waste was a European Interreg 2 Seas project that aimed to help small and medium-sized enterprises see business waste not just as waste, but as a potential raw material for new circular applications.
More was needed than just inspiration. Entrepreneurs needed to understand what a circular economy means, how waste streams arise in their organisation, which regulations are relevant, which circular business models are possible, and how they can take concrete steps towards smarter resource and waste management.
Maxcademy was tasked with converting that specialist knowledge into an accessible online academy. The content had to be suitable for entrepreneurs in different countries, in three languages, and be able to be followed independently online.

Maxcademy interviewed the subject matter expert and translated specialist knowledge into a logical learning structure and understandable online content.

Presenter video, animation, visual explanations and knowledge questions make abstract subjects more concrete and provide variety.
A learning programme from circular economy to practical waste management
The academy is structured as a modular programme. Participants can follow the complete learning path, but also go through subjects separately. In the introduction to the training, topics such as circular economy, raw material and production chains, circular business models, industrial waste and circular design are introduced as main themes.
The modules combine explanations with practical examples and quiz questions. Thus, the programme is not only about the theory behind circularity, but also about the translation to business operations: mapping waste streams, better separating waste, understanding costs, recognising circular business opportunities and planning concrete improvement actions.
In in-depth components, for example, a step-by-step approach is used for resource management, including goals, actions, and evaluation. This way, the participant is not only offered knowledge but also a structure to get started within their own organisation.
One academy, three languages, and full LMS hosting
Because Upcycle Your Waste was an international Interreg project, the same learning experience had to be available for different language areas. Maxcademy developed and managed the academy in Dutch, French, and English.
In addition to Learning Design, scripts, and production, Maxcademy also took care of the technical side. The training sessions were placed in an online learning environment, and Maxcademy arranged the LMS hosting. As a result, participants from different countries could independently access the same substantive learning pathway.
The original Interreg project has now been completed, but the learning environment is still online. This allows interested parties to view the academy and the way the content is structured for themselves.

A European academy that remains available even after the project ends
The UYW Academy became one of the concrete knowledge products of the European Upcycle Your Waste project. According to the official Interreg 2 Seas project overview, a total of 453 people participated in the academy.
The solution combined:
- substantive knowledge from interviews with an expert;
- complete Learning Design, writing and editorial work by Maxcademy;
- modular e-learning with examples and quiz questions;
- presenter video and animation;
- localisation in Dutch, French and English;
- LMS setup and hosting by Maxcademy;
- a learning environment that remains available online even after the temporary project ends.
For Maxcademy, Upcycle Your Waste shows how a temporary international programme can be translated into a sustainable digital knowledge source: from the first expert interview to scripts, multimedia, multilingual e-learning and technical hosting.
